Who is Jesus? The most important question . . .
As you visit our website and learn about Joliet Baptist Church, one of the most important questions to ask yourself is, Who Is Jesus? The answer to this question holds eternal value. It is the key to understanding who we serve and why we serve. Additionally, it is the key to gaining the peace that can only be found in understanding what Jesus has done to secure our eternal destiny.
Scripture paints a wonderful picture of who Jesus is, and what He has done for mankind. It is most important that we get this right, because as John 14:6 says,
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except though Me.’”
In other words, the only way to eternal life with our heavenly Father is though the work and sacrifice Jesus has completed for us.
To begin with, as predicted hundreds of years before His birth, Jesus was born of a virgin woman.
“Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14
Jesus lived. That is beyond doubt. So much has been written about Him, both in scripture and other works, that it impossible to deny His life. But it is critically important to understand that although He was born of a woman, He was the Son of God.
“And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’” Luke 1:35
After His birth, Jesus lived a sinless life. He was there to take our sins away and was the perfect sacrifice.
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:14-15
After a perfect life, Jesus willingly gave Himself up on a cross to pay for our sin.
“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: ‘Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” 1 Peter 2:21-24
Ultimately, Jesus conquered death and three days later rose from the rock tomb. Many have questioned this, yet His followers did not. They saw Him, they believed in what He had done for them and His closest followers died telling others what they knew to be true – Jesus defeated death! No one dies for a lie, but many will die for the truth. Jesus’ followers died holding to their faith in Jesus as a risen Savior.
Because of the work of Jesus all who accept Him as Lord and Savior can know the Father and experience eternal life.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begottenSon, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Life eternal is ours if we answer the question correctly……
WHO IS JESUS?
He is the Son of God, The Eternal King, the ONLY Savior, and Deity Himself.
